located in the former residence of famous Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn. When Rembrandt bought the house he was in considerable debt eventually unable to pay his creditors. In June 1656 he filed for bankruptcy. All his valuable possessions were sold.

An inventory was made of the furniture, works of art and implements which were to be auctioned in 1656 and 1657. This inventory was a great aid eventually in refurbishing the ten rooms in Rembrandt's house. The interior once more looks exactly like it did in the 17th century.

The exterior and the interior of the house are exactly the way they were when he lived here in the 17th century. Of the approximately 290 etchings Rembrandt has made, 260 are on display in the Rembrandt House. The museum is also the proud owner of four of Rembrandt's copper etching plates.

The building in which the Amsterdam Historical Museum is located has a long history. In 1578 the Amsterdam City Council decided to house the orphans in the convent, as it was then. The building was expanded in the 17th century and housed orphans until 1960. After this year the building was restored turning it into a museum. The museum's permanent exhibition shows how Amsterdam developed from the 13th century until today. Many splendid items from the 17th and 18th centuries are on view.

Four former synagogues house the Jewish Historical Museum. The oldest of these four synagogues was constructed in 1670. As the Jewish community continued to grow, a new synagogue was built next to the first one. Not much later the third synagogue was built, followed by the fourth one in 1752. During the Second World War the synagogues were partly destroyed by the Nazis.

The majority of the Jewish people of Amsterdam did not return from the concentration camps. As a result the synagogues were closed in 1987 and the complex was rebuilt into the museum it is now. Glass roofs link the four synagogues. Various exhibitions highlight the history and culture of the Jews in Netherlands . The Jewish identity and the war years are the topics in the newest synagogue while the religious aspects of Judaism are portrayed in the oldest.

Anne Frank's House is situated in the centre of Amsterdam : the hiding place where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary during World War II. Anne Frank was a normal girl in exceptional circumstances when for more than two years her diary described the events in her daily life.

The Anne Frank Foundation was founded in 1957 to save the Anne Frank House from being demolished. In 1960 the house was opened as museum and since then it has been visited by millions of people from the four corners of the globe. The Foundation also develops educational products and activities. This includes educational material for young people. This is aimed at preparing them for the future when they will study and work with people from different backgrounds.

There are more than 200 exceptional canvases from Van Gogh, as well as 500 drawings and 700 written documents.
